Lahore delights visitors with a rich history, local cultural scenes, its old, traditional market, delicious food, and hospitality of its residents. Nevertheless, travelling to the city poses a challenge that is difficult to overcome – air pollution. At the time of the visit, Lahore was suffering from very poor air quality and therefore, according to other trips made previously, it was a completely different experience.
The first step taken by the traveller was a haircut. However, instead of going to a fashionable salon, the decision was made to go to an ordinary barbershop. The place was quite simple with a chair, mirror and simply several tools. Nevertheless, the barber was very careful about his job. The price for the haircut and traditional shave was only 200 Pakistani rupees plus generous tip for excellent service.
After the haircut, the traveller explored the public transport system in Lahore. It is modern and very cheap. For example, one trip costs only 25 rupees. Moreover, the trip was made with the help of the excuse, kind locals that assisted not only in understanding how to pay for the trip, but also directed the passenger.
The first stop was Anarkali Bazaar, one of the oldest market places in South Asia. The streets were full of food stalls selling anything from food to clothing and second-hand books to vegetables. Walking through the bustling market was a glimpse of the lives of people in the city beyond the famous tourist attractions.
The hospitality of the locals is above all something very impressive. The people were always ready to help, offer food or drinks, and use their vehicle to take us from one place to another. The locals’ friendliness was very helpful and made walking around the unfamiliar streets easier.
Shopping was another important part of the market experience. Among other things, the opportunity to buy locally produced wallets, clothing, shoes, and watches was exciting. The luxury watch was purchased at the end of the trip with the intention of giving it away to somebody who helped us during our visit to the city.
Food was thought to be one of the best things about Lahore, recognized as the food capital of Pakistan. Unfortunately, an ongoing stomach issue made eating a challenge. Eventually, a potato paratha was ordered, but the spicy filling was too hot to handle. Nevertheless, the taste was appreciated despite being able to take only one bite.
The situation with air quality was difficult. After spending an entire day outdoors, the effects were felt in the form of dryness in the face and throat. The experience gave a glimpse into what locals experience when pollution is at its worst. The air quality can vary on a daily basis, but the issue of pollution remains one of the major concerns of Lahore.
Despite this, the experience was quite enjoyable. The trip had to be cut shorter due to health problems, which meant that a number of fascinating places had not been visited. Nevertheless, Lahore showed its hospitality, which is characteristic of Pakistan, and its rich cultural heritage.
